Ira Corbett

Ira Corbett registered for the draft on October 16, 1940. Born July 29, 1917, he was from Nicholas, West Virginia and was employed at the Greenbrier Hotel, located in White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia.
Enlisting in the US Army at Fort Thomas, Newport, Kentucky on March 24, 1942, this twenty-four-year-old was 5’-5”, 145 pounds with a light complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair and no other obvious physical characteristics.
PVT Corbett became a member of C-Battery, 319th Field Artillery Battalion at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. Later transferred to A-Battery of the 82nd Airborne Field Artillery Division, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.
Following his training he traveled with A-Battery of the 319th to North Africa arriving in Casablanca May 10, 1943.

March 20, 1944, from duty to Absent Sick quarters 0730. Station: Papillon Hall, Lubenham, England.
March 27, 1944, from Sick Quarters to line of duty, 0600. Station: Papillon Hall, Lubenham, England.
February 16, 1945, appointed to Tec 5, MOS 345 (Truck Driver Light Trucks). Station: Stavelot, Belgium VK7201, Nor D’Guerre.
He fought in the major campaigns of Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Normandy, Holland, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe.
His service was awarded with the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Merit Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster, European/African Middle Eastern Service Medal with six bronze service stars, one bronze service arrowhead and the Bronze Star Medal.
Tec 5 Ira Corbett was honorably discharged on June 16, 1945, and returned to civilian life. He was employed as a signal operator with the Erie Railroad while residing in Kenton, Ohio.
Ira Corbett, 34, died October 20, 1951.
