The Island

Unusual in the history of the 319th Glider Field Artillery Battalion, the batteries remained in the same position for a period of thirty seven days near Bemmel, Holland. German artillery was the heaviest the battalion had ever witnessed. The 319th was in direct support of the 508th Parachute Infantry with harassing fire and cover for night patrols in “The Island,” a water bound sector between Nijmegen and Arnhem.
