Jasper Newton Elswick registered for the draft on October 16, 1940. Born December 23, 1910, he was from Amma, West Virginia and employed by J.B. Jackson located in Clendenin, West Virginia.

PFC Jasper Elswick

Inducted into the US Army on March 28, 1942 at Fort Thomas, Newport, Kentucky, this twenty-nine-year-old was 5-8, 142 pounds with a ruddy complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair but no obvious physical characteristics that could be used as an identifying mark.

PVT Elswick trained at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, then Camp Claiborne, and transferred to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina in August 1943. It was here he became a member of the 319th Glider Field Artillery, A-Battery of the 82nd Airborne Division.

Jasper Elswick traveled with the battalion to North Africa arriving in Casablanca May 10, 1943.

  7. Decorations and citations: Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Merit Badge, Army Presidential Unit Citation, World War II Victory Medal, European/African Middle Eastern Service Medal, three bronze service stars, one bronze service arrowhead, Purple Heart.

PFC Jasper Elswick was laid to rest in the Grafton National Cemetery, Section B, Site 1615, Grafton, West Virginia.
