Dear Mrs. Gracie:

Your letter to the Adjutant General concerning your husband, the late First Lieutenant Emanuel H. Gracie, Jr., has been referred to this office.

I regret that I must inform you that information concerning the burial of the remains of your husband has not yet been received in this office. However, our Graves Registration Forces in the field are making a complete and thorough search of all areas over which our men fought. All available information such as enemy reports of death and burial, either captured or transmitted through the International Red Cross, results of interrogation of returned Prisoners of War, statements made by natives of the localities being searched, and reports submitted by Commanding Officers and fellow soldiers who were in the vicinity at the time of the fatality, are being used to implement their efforts. It is contemplated that all remains so recovered will be interred in established American Military Cemeteries pending the initiation of the Program of Repatriation. I sincerely hope that this intensive search will result in the discovery and the identification of your husband’s remains. Please be assured that when information is received that this is accomplished and his remains have been properly interred, you will be informed without delay.

Please accept my sincere sympathy in the loss of your husband.

Gentlemen:

In July 1945, I received a telegram and a letter of confirmation informing me of the death of mu husband, First Lieutenant Emanuel H. Gracie, Jr., O-1172030, F.A. The letter stated that he was killed in action in Wyler, Germany, September 18, 1944. As yet, I have received no further information concerning his death. I have written several letters seeking information, but I have not even received answers to them.

It seems as though I should at least know the name and location of the cemetery where my husbands body is buried and also his grave number. If this information is not possible, I would greatly appreciate any other details you could give me concerning his death.

Thank you for your kind attention.

                                                                                                            Very truly yours,

                                                                                                            (Mrs.) Marcia B. Gracie

Dear Mrs. Gracie:

Referenced is made to Army Effects Bureau previous correspondence regarding some additional personal effects belonging to your husband, First Lieutenant Emanuel H. Gracie, Jr.

Search of the personal effects records of the European Theatre Area fails to reveal the existence of or disposition of a wrist watch, camera, or razor. These articles were not listed on the overseas report of the effects of your husband, and they were not included among his belongings upon arrival here.

Realizing to the fullest extent your desire to receive the articles you are seeking to recover; I am indeed sorry to convey this report.

                                                                                                            Yours very truly,

1.     ETA records do not reveal the existence of/or disposition of the missing personnel effects belonging to 1st Lt. Gracie.

2.     It is recommended that burial records of the Memorial Division be checked to ascertain if any personal property was found with the remains.

3.     Further tracer action in the European Theater is inadvisable at this late date.

Gentlemen:

In July 1945, I received one footlocker and contents and one carton and contents of personal property belonging to my husband, First Lieutenant Emanuel H. Gracie, Jr. Not all of his personal belongings were in them, such as, wristwatch, camera and razor.

Is there any way I can have these articles traced or could you by any chance be holding them for administration of my husband’s estate?

Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

                                                                                                            Sincerely yours,
