PFC David Hodges

David Carman Hodges registered for the draft on October 16, 1941. Born December 8, 1910, he was from McNairy, Tennessee.  At the time of his registration he was self-employed in McNairy, Tennessee. This twenty-nine-year-old was 6-1, 195 pounds with a light complexion, gray eyes, and brown hair. The only listed physical characteristic listed on his registration card was his wearing of glasses.

PVT Hodges was enlisted in the army on March 13, 1942, where he initially began his training at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana as a soldier in C- Battery, 319th Field Artillery.

In August 1942, the 319th transferred to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, now a glider airborne battalion where he trained with the 319th Glider Field Artillery, A-Battery of the 82nd Airborne Division.

As a member of the 319th Glider Field Artillery, A-Battery of the 82nd Airborne Division, he sailed with the battalion from Staten Island, New York, aboard the SS Santa Rosa to North Africa arriving in Casablanca May 10, 1943. 

 Company Morning Reports

Company Morning Reports were produced every morning by the individual Army units to record personnel matters. The following events for David Hodges were reported:

  • October 29, 1943, from duty to transferred to the MP Platoon 82nd Airborne Division at 1400. Station: Naples, Italy.

  • April 14, 1944, promoted to PFC – Duty 677. Station: Braunstone Leicestershire, England. MP Plat 82d A/B Div Camp.

  • May 1945, hospitalized and discharged for disability. Station; Unknown.

  • Discharged - October 29, 1945 - KGH, Memphis, Tennessee

He fought in the major campaigns of Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Normandy and awarded with the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Merit Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster, European/African Middle Eastern Service Medal, 3 bronze battle stars and 1 bronze service arrowhead and Glider Badge. No further information regarding his service or awards was available.

During the post-war years David Hodges worked as a farmer and cotton buyer. He was a Mason and a Shriner as well as a member of the Selmer Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

David Hodges, 74, died April 13, 1985, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee.
